St. Petersburg officials are trying to create a safer commute - whether you're a driver, rider, pedestrian or cyclist.

  • City of St. Petersburg holding public meetings to gain input on transportation issues
  • Meetings being held Tuesday - Thursday
  • St. Petersburg Complete Streets

To that effect, a series of public meetings is being held to discuss roadways, bicycle lanes, sidewalks and other transportation issues.

The city's "Complete Streets" policy began in November 2015 in an effort to make streets safer and more convenient. In an ongoing process, the city will take input from residents who actually use the streets and sidewalks.

"I think the bike lane here is very, very helpful and I think there could be a lot of improvements," said St. Pete resident Matthew Johnson. "But it's pretty good the way it is now."

Meanwhile, Alan Paup, a merchant on Beach Drive, said he'd like to see less congestion on the sidewalks.

"No bicycles and skateboards on the sidewalk," Paup said. "People getting run over with the bicycles on the sidewalks, getting pushed out of the way, it's insane, working on Beach Drive.

"It's maddening watching the people and seeing how rude the bicyclists and skateboarders are to the pedestrians walking along Beach Drive."

Other suggestions have included more trees downtown and more crosswalks.

The city is holding the second meeting Tuesday at 6 p.m.
