Demolition crews have been hard at work for a few weeks now, eliminating the last remaining vestiges of the old Tampa Tribune building.

  • Demolition continues of Tampa Tribune building
  • Newspaper stopped printing in May 2016
  • Building being torn down to make way for luxury apartments

Once the provider of news for Tampa and the surrounding Hillsborough County communities, the defunct newspaper's building on the banks of the Hillsborough River has sat empty since the Tampa Bay Times purchased the Tribune in May 2016.

The Tribune had been in business since 1895 and located on Parker Street in downtown Tampa since 1975.

The demolition of the building on the 4.2-acre site will make way for a 400-unit luxury apartment complex. The developers have said they will incorporate an Tampa Tribune sign into the design of the complex as a way of preserving the Tribune's heritage in Tampa.

A Miami-based real estate firm, Related Group, paid $17.75 million for the Tribune property in summer 2015.

The apartments are slated to be completed by 2018.
