Several families and nearly two dozen people are without homes after a fire ripped through a 16-unit apartment building Wednesday.

Fire sparked at the Harbour Pointe Apartments in Bradenton Wednesday afternoon around 4:30 p.m.

Crews arrived within four minutes of the call and found fire in the stairs, which quickly spread to the attic area.

They were able to get the fire under control within 20 minutes but the building still suffered heavy fire damage to one unit and water and smoke damage to seven others.

The damage is estimated at $250,000.

Officials said no residents or firefighters were injured during the incident.

The Red Cross is providing assistance to 17 adults and four children.

Fire officials are still working to determine the cause of the fire.
