Nearly two dozen volunteers grabbed their brushes and rollers Saturday and painted their way around Annette Hodges home in Clearwater.

  • Organizers say it helps keep the community beautiful

Many of them were strangers to Annette and her husband, who have lived in the quiet neighborhood for 42 years.

"My husband took sick and he had to stop working and go on Medicaid," she said. "We haven't been able to keep the house up anymore like we used to."

The team spent about three hours on the Hodges' home, using a color that Annette picked out herself.

"I wanna keep it up nice, so they have have it one day, one day. It'll go to my grandchildren," she said.

In all, a total of 250 volunteers from around the Bay Area helped to make over 10 homes in Clearwater. Members of Clearwater Fire & Rescue also visited each home to check the smoke detectors and install new ones as needed.

"It's helping someone who can't afford to do it themselves, and it's also helping to keep the community beautiful by painting their house so it looks nice in the neighborhood," said president Samantha Almaraz.

For the Hodges, the helping hand was the spirit lift they needed.
