A 23-year-old Lakeland woman was killed in a Monday night crash, according to the Polk County Sheriff's Office.

Rachel Nicole Tew was the passenger in a vehicle driven by 16-year-old Hanley Carnley, the Sheriff's Office traffic unit said.

The crash occurred about 9:15 p.m.

Authorities said a 1999 Ford F-250 truck, driven by Carnley, was heading eastbound on Deeson Road near Christine Road in Lakeland. Another truck in front of the F-250 began braking, and Carnley tried to avoid a collision.

According to investigators, the F-250 went off the roadway, hit a drainage culvert and flipped over. Carnley suffered minor injuries. Deputies said Tew and Carnley were not wearing seatbelts. 

Deputies are trying to locate the driver of an early 2000's silver pick-up truck as a witness to this investigationthis is the truck that was ahead of the F-250 on Deeson Road at the time of the crash.
