How does homemade romaine lettuce sound for breakfast? If you're two resident sea turtles at the Clearwater Marine Aquarium, it sounds like a treat!

  • Students complete service project by growing lettuce
  • Lettuce was fed to Stubby and Titus on Wednesday

Fourth-graders at Saint Paul's - Clearwater's Independent School have been growing hydroponic lettuce for the past five weeks in the Saint Paul's greenhouse as part of their service projects.

Students visited the aquarium Wednesday and watched the lettuce being fed to Stubby and Titus, two resident sea turtles.

As a result of the project, students learn a sense of accomplishment. They plant the lettuce, take measurements and record data while the lettuce is growing to its full length.

As part of an engineering challenge, students also had to come up with ways to keep critters out. This year, they designed cages to protect the lettuce as well as adding a fake snake to the greenhouse.

The school donated so much lettuce, the other green sea turtles at the aquarium will get to enjoy some as well.
