The North East High School alum was drafted by the Milwaukee Brewers in 2010 after attending Barry University in Miami. He retired last year, and started distributing "The Batter's Box" in February.

The product's pitch is simple. Each month, "Batter's Box" subscribers get a different box filled with baseball accessories, snacks and workout tips.

As a former professional ball player, Shaw said he knows what it's like to get new gear.

"The most exciting day of spring training every year is the day your agent sends you all your gear," Shaw said. "And it comes in a box. So I remember being excited every spring, and it would show up randomly every March and it would show up in the mail, and I would say 'Yes, I know what this is.'"

Since he retired last year, Shaw has been coaching locally. He told us he was inspired to launch the company in part by his coaching experience.

"I am seeing these kids show up to the field with supplies that are just used as can be," Shaw said. "So I am like, maybe I can put something together, buy it at a bulk rate and sell it cheap to these guys so they can have nice stuff when they go on to the field."

Shaw packs the boxes with things like eye black, bat grip and bubblegum. Each month, he also randomly picks once box to include a special prize, like a major league jersey.

In just the last month, Shaw has subscriptions from local high school players, little leaguers and even a Pittsburgh Pirates player.

"By giving them stuff, new bat grip, new wrist bands, new eye black, it makes them feel like they are awesome already, and then they go on the field and use this stuff," Shaw said.

Shaw sells the boxes individually or for $30 a month for a subscription. For more information, visit thebattersbox.co.
