A Hernando County family is out of their home after a fire broke out in their garage Sunday.

  • Family's belongings, both cars destroyed
  • Red Cross provided assistance

The family of five was able to get out unharmed, but many of their belongings, including both of their cars, were destroyed.

Early Sunday morning, the parents said they heard the smoke alarm going off, and then they smelt smoke. They said while the entire house is not scorched, they aren't able to stay in their home.

"By the time they put out the fire and everything, they told me that, yeah, I can stay here, but they can't turn on the power or water until we fix all the electrical problems, which is all throughout the whole house, the whole roof," said Edith Gonzalez Rodriguez. "The water heater exploded and kept running so they had to turn out the water."

A family member was there Sunday afternoon to help them find a place to stay. The family did not have any insurance, but the Red Cross has provided some assistance to help them get back on their feet.
