The Coast Guard rescued two people Wednesday after their plane crashed in the Gulf of Mexico near Yankeetown, Florida.

A 19-year-old male from Longwood, who piloted the plane, and an 18-year-old female passenger from Cape Coral, were rescued after their plane went down around 8:30 p.m. Wednesday. 

Watch standers at Coast Guard Sector St. Petersburg received notification from Levy County dispatch that a single-engine plane carrying two people had crashed near the end of County Road 40 boat ramp. 

The Federal Aviation Administration had reported the plane was experiencing engine problems before it crashed. 

A crew from Coast Guard station Yankeetown arrived on scene around 9:20 p.m. The two people were on top of the plane in 2-feet of water. 

Officials said no injuries were reported. 

The couple was headed to Orlando Sanford International Airport from Cedar Key when they crashed. 

The FAA is still investigating what caused the plane to crash.
