The principal who sent a letter to staff saying to put white kids in class together has sent out an apology and explanation to parents.

But some parents said it's too little, too late.

Campbell Park Elementary School Principal Christine Hoffman sent an email to her staff this week titled "class list." It was meant to give teachers a guideline on how students are placed in each class.

The email had suggestions like "Student numbers need to be even for each class," and "Try to keep the number of boys and girls equal."

Hoffman also wrote, "White students should be in the same class."

The remark puzzled teachers and angered parents.

On Friday, Hoffman sent a letter to parents that said in part: "As a white woman leading a predominately black school, I am approaching this as an opportunity to learn."

As for the "white students" remark, she wrote: "I was asking that there not be a class with only one white student. I was not asking that all white students in each grade be clustered, as that is not our practice in creating class lists."

Parents such as Annie Young said the note sent Friday isn't enough.

"That's alright she said sorry, but I still think they need to move her," Young said. "I still feel they need to move her because she still got it in her. She's just saying she's sorry because she doesn't want to lose her job. That's the way I feel about it. I may be wrong."

Principal Hoffman also invited parents to school to talk more about the letter if they needed any questions answered. She ended the letter with another apology.

Bay News 9 tried to talk with the school superintendent about the issue, but we were told he was out of town in meetings.
