  • Hector Acevedo, 24, charged with 1st degree murder
  • Shyeanne Lewis, 23, killed early Saturday morning

Hector Acevedo, 24, is being charged with first degree murder in the death of his girlfriend, Shyeanne Lewis, 23.

Police first took Acevedo into custody for being a felon in possession of a firearm. They were called after Acevedo told relatives that he wanted to kill himself.

While in custody, police said Acevedo made statements that raised concerns about the well being of his girlfriend.

Police responded to Lewis's apartment and when she didn't answer they forced entry into her apartment. Police found Lewis dead due to body trauma.

Acevedo admitted to going to her apartment around 3 a.m. Saturday and said they got into an argument.

A neighbor said she was a victim of domestic violence more than 30 years ago and the incident brought it all back.

"It could have been me," said Angeletta Alexander. "And, I thank God that it wasn't me. Buth in this neighborhood here, we all should get to know our neighbors."

Members of Lewis's family say they are devastated.

"They lost a good person," said Angela Martin, Shyeanne Lewis's mother. "We just lost a good person. I know every parent brags about their kids, but Shy was my only child. She was just my world."

Due to evidence at the scene and Acevedo's statements, he was arrested and charged with murder, police said.
