A 13-year-old boy died Friday morning from his injuries received in a crash Thursday afternoon, where he was hit by a drunk driver.

Five students from Dundee Ridge Middle Academy were hit by John Camfield, 48, after they had gotten off the bus, officials said. 

The crash happened around 5 p.m. on Allegheny road near Athabasca in Poinciana. 

The five kids have been identified as Jonte Robinson, 15, Jasmine Robertson, 14, Rylan Pryce, 12, Jahiem Robertson, 13, and Juan Mena, 13.

Jahiem Robertson, 13, and Juan Mena, 13, received serious, life-threatening injuries, including spinal injuries, facial fractures, and head trauma. Officials said Jahiem succumbed to his injuries around 9:30 a.m. Friday. 

 

Officials said Camfield fled the scene after hitting the kids and ended up hitting a stopped car on Poinciana Parkway. 

An off-duty officer responded to the scene after he got a call from his daughter who witnessed the crash. Deputy Jonathan Quintana located the suspect, John Camfield, down the road and was able to take him into custody. 

Officials said a pregnant woman in the vehicle received minor injuries.

Camfield is charged with 4 counts DUI and property damage, 1 count DUI, 1 count DUI with serious bodily injury, 1 count DUI manslaughter, 1 count reckless driving with serious bodily injury, 1 count leaving the scene of a crash involving serious bodily injury, 1 count vehiclular homicide, and 1 count leaving the scene of a crash involving death. 

Polk Sheriff Grady Judd and Polk School Board Superintendent Jackie Byrd held a news conference at 10:30 a.m. on the incident. 

During the news conference Sheriff Judd said Camfield worked in law enforcement for 18 years in Mississippi. Sheriff Judd spoke with the law enforcement agencies in Mississippi and said Camfield has an alcohol problem. 

Sheriff Judd said Camfield's blood alcohol level was .147, which is over the legal limit, seven hours after the crash.

Camfield is being held on a $600,000 bond. If he bonds out, he is restricted to a curfew and cannot use drugs or alcohol.
