Two young women were killed in a car crash Friday night in Citrus County.

Saige Fields, 18, and Samantha O’Conner, 18, died after Fields lost control of the vehicle and collided with a road sign and then crashed into a tree, troopers said.

The crashed occurred around 10:30 p.m. at US Highway 19 and North Champion Point.

Troopers said Fields was making erratic lane changes on US 19 when she lost control of the vehicle.

Troopers said O’Conner was pronounced dead at the scene.

Fields and a third passenger, Derrick Powell, 15, were transported to local hospitals, where Fields later passed away from her injuries.

Powell is in serious condition at Shands Hospital.

According to the report, neither O’Connor nor Powell were wearing seat belts.  

The crash remains under investigation.
