Here's your Tampa area forecast for late Thursday into Friday and the weekend ahead.

  • Record highs possible again
  • Better rain chance over the weekend
  • Lower temperatures next week

Tonight, the few coastal showers will end. Skies will be mostly clear to clear.

With light winds toward daybreak, there will be smoke in the air near fires, especially across southern Polk, southern Hillsborough and maybe southern Pinellas Counties.

Low temperatures will be similar to Thursday morning, near 70 north to mid 70s Tampa Bay.

Surface high pressure remains located near Bermuda. This will keep a predominant east wind flow across the Florida peninsula.

Winds will be a little lighter on Friday, allowing for the west coast sea breeze to make a little progress inland compared to today. There will be a few showers or storms along this sea breeze later in the day, mainly for the coastal counties.

High pressure in the upper levels will continue producing hot conditions across the region, with upper 80s coastal areas to mid 90s inland. Conditions will be very similar to today, so it is once again looking like we will see record setting temperatures for Friday.

The upper level ridge of high pressure over the region will break down Saturday into Sunday. Afternoon temperatures will not be quite as high.

As upper-level energy moves in from the northwest, rain chances will improve.  Timing will be in the afternoons and mainly along sea breeze boundaries from both coasts.

NATIONAL:

An outbreak of severe thunderstorms is expected across parts of the southern and central Plains this afternoon and evening through the overnight hours. Strong, long-track tornadoes are likely from parts of central and southern Kansas southward into western Oklahoma. Large hail, damaging winds, and flash flooding will also be possible for a larger portion of the southern and central Plains.

CARIBBEAN:

A tropical wave is moving across the south-central portion of the Caribbean. Scattered to numerous showers and thunderstorms have been very persistent  during the past 24 hours. Thunderstorms have moved south of the island of Jamaica, Cuba and Hispaniola, re- development could occur later. Locally heavy rain is producing flash flooding on some of the islands.
