A brand new and potentially life-saving vessel just hit the water in Palm Harbor.

  • New boat equipped with tower for better navigation
  • Previous boat in service since 1990s
  • Funds to purchase new craft secured through state grant

Palm Harbor Fire crews recently unveiled their new rescue boat, one that's unique to the Bay area due to its array of features.

The boat is one of the few based locally that's equipped with a tower for better navigation. The boat's design also allows it reach extremely shallow spaces.

Fire crews believe the new craft will come in handy, as their water rescue calls have increased immensely over the past few years.

"Boating in this area has just gone through the roof," said Lt. Steve Gorby. "Any weekend boater will know boat traffic is 3-10 times what it was a couple of years ago."

Chief Craig Maciuba said the new boat will cut down on response times.

"Essentially the unit will just drive to the dock, boat's already in the water, and they'll be off," Maciuba said.

Maciuba went on to say Palm Harbor Fire & Rescue’s previous boat had been in use since the early 1990’s, and wear and tear was making the craft unsafe. Senator Jack Latvala helped Palm Harbor Fire Rescue secure funds for the new boat through a state grant.

In addition to its tower, the new boat carries flares and heat sensors, allowing for nighttime operations and aiding in the detection boat fires.

Maciuba said the vessel is crucial in coastal communities, and they will use it to assist neighboring agencies.

"It gives us a platform to quickly get out to the victim, to treat them, stabilize them and get them to shore to be transported," Maciuba said.
