Residents in Tampa started the day with a Bible read-a-thon.

“Therefore the Lord almighty says this: Because you have not listen to my words, I will summon all people of the north and my servant King of Bablon, declares the Lord.”

Volunteers will be outside of Tampa City Hall reading from the Bible throughout the day. The goal is to read from the Bible for 24-hours straight.

“This is a very positive experience. I’ve been reading some verses from the book of Jerimiah and it’s not all that positive, but it’s true and it’s historic, and it’s important to rehearse these things, especially things that God wanted to say,” volunteer Oscar Hills said.

Since 1952, the National Day of Prayer has been held every year on the first Thursday of May. It invites people of all faiths to pray for the nation.

The main events today will start at 11 a.m. at City Hall and then at Steinbrenner Field at 7 p.m.

During the event, volunteers will feed the homeless. Also, world-renowned recording artist Eddie James will minister during the event and then perform at Steinbrenner Field.
