  • Cigarette sparks fire in Hernando home, officials say
  • No one was home at the time of the fire
  • A family dog died in the fire
  • Home sustained fire and smoke damage

Hernando County Fire Rescue was called out to a home on Roper Road.

Initial reports stated that neighbors could see flames through a window at the house, officials said.

Crews said smoke was showing from the home when they arrived and located the fire in a bedroom.

Firefighters were able to quickly contain and extinguish the fire.

No one was home during the fire, but a family dog was found inside the home and had succumbed to the smoke, officials said.

The bedroom sustained heavy fire damage and the remainder of the home sustained heat and smoke damage. Officials said the home is untenable.

Officials said the cause of the fire appears to be from an unattended cigarette near a bed.

Hernando County Fire Rescue would like to remind the community of the dangers of smoking and then leaving tobacco products unattended, especially in sleeping areas.
