Hit-and-run driver sought in fatal St. Petersburg crash involving bicyclist

St. Petersburg police are searching for a driver that struck a man on a bicycle late Thursday and drove off.

That bicyclist, 58-year-old John H. Sampson, later died. 

According to police, the crash happened in the 3300 block of 6th Street South just before midnight. 

Officers found Sampson in the street. He was taken to Bayfront Health St. Petersburg where he was pronounced dead shortly after arriving, officers said.

During their investigation, authorities said an unknown vehicle had hit Sampson and left the scene.
