Do you have a need for speed and are looking for some fun on Father’s Day? St. Pete Beach may have the perfect event.

  • First ever "Grand Prix of the Gulf"
  • More than 100 racers compete in powerboat races
  • Organizers say the goal is to have a good time

The inaugural “Grand Prix of the Gulf” kicked off this weekend. More than 100 racers from across the world are competing in the powerboat races that also feature jet skis, sea-doos, and wave runners.

Brandy Lewis brought her family to town from Orlando to watch her husband compete.

"It's such a family sport," Lewis said. "Everybody is so friendly, we're on the water, we love the water."

While race fans flocked to the crystal clear waters and beautiful beaches, they also had the opportunity to check out other local attractions.

"Look at this place, our sport is all about being on the beach, having a good time and having a great piece of water to use," said Azam Rangoonwala, managing director of P1 USA.

The races showcase Bay Area beaches and give adrenaline junkies a spectacular show.

"It's just a beautiful beach and it's very welcoming and some of the other places we've been it's a little rougher," Lewis said.

The races are happening in front of the PostCard Inn on St. Pete Beach. The events continue on Sunday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
