The Sarasota County Sheriff's Office arrested a 26-year-old man on aggravated battery charges after he allegedly beat a woman until she was unconscious.

  • Man beat woman until she was unconscious, detectives said
  • Joshua Curtis charged with aggravated battery
  • Victim in serious condition

The sheriff's office was first made aware of the woman on Monday by doctors at Venice Regional Hospital who determined she suffered a severe head injury requiring surgery.

Detectives learned that the woman was taken to the hospital on Sunday after Joshua Curtis, 26, called 911 to report that the woman was unconscious due to a pre-existing medical condition.

Witnesses told detectives that Curtis punched the woman twice and put a pillow over her face until she was unconscious, late Saturday night. Detectives learned that Curtis did not call 911 until the next after he woke up.

Detectives said Curtis admitted to battering the victim during a search of his home. He was arrested and charged with aggravated battery with great bodily harm.

Authorities said Curtis has prior arrests for battery and no valid driver's license.

He is being held at the Sarasota County jail with no bond.

The victim remains in serious condition at Venice Regional Hospital.
