If there was a way to get to your destination faster and safer, you'd take it, right?

What if it was as simple as moving over a lane?

June was designated as Lane Courtesy Month by the state of Florida. It's a reminder to move over to allow faster traffic to pass.

It's something St. Petersburg resident Gary Fleming would like to see more of on the interstates.

"I mean, you have some people that's in the fast lane, know they're going slow and stay there, when there's people trying to get to where they need to be," he said.

Using lane courtesy is safer for everyone. There is less road rage. You arrive at your destination sooner. You can save gas and money.

"Keeping traffic flowing efficiently and by not obstructing that inside lane, that fast or passing lane, however you want to call it, would keep traffic flowing more efficiently," said Florida Highway Patrol spokesman Steve Gaskins.

"As you bottle-neck traffic, that's where people start trying to change lanes and jockey for position, passing other traffic, cutting in and out. It causes a lot of problems."

The problems can easily be avoided by moving over.

"Use courtesy. Use caution," Gaskins said. "If you're going to be traveling slower than the flow of traffic, move to the right."

Bay News 9 has partnered with the Florida Department of Transportation on its "Alert Today, Alive Tomorrow" campaign. The idea is to make sure we're all sharing the road with people who walk or ride their bike and everyone makes it where they need to be safely.
