The FHP said a driver traveling westbound just after 11 a.m. experienced a medical emergency and began traveling across lanes. His passenger, Kenneth Franklin, helped try to bring the vehicle to a stop.

Trooper Jack Hypes saw what was happening and stopped the vehicle along the inside shoulder of the roadway.

"Once stopped, Trooper Hypes approached the vehicle on foot as it then lurched to the rear and collided with Trooper Hypes," the FHP said in a news release. "Trooper Hypes was knocked to the ground and partially run over by the left rear tire of the vehicle."

Franklin exited the vehicle and helped Hypes get away from the moving vehicle, which was finally secured.

The FHP said Franklin's actions were instrumental in protecting Hypes from further injury. The news release didn't specify any injury to Hypes.
