Gas prices are already at a 12-year low in Tampa and could go even lower, just in time for the holiday weekend.

The low prices are leading to a spike in travel this weekend.

  • Average price per gallon in Florida is $2.25
  • Tampa has several locations under $2
  • 44 million Americans traveling this weekend, AAA says

AAA says more than 2 million Floridians will hit the road this weekend, up 5 percent from last year.

The average price per gallon in Florida is $2.25, with Tampa having some of the lowest prices in the state.

Dawn Grant and Matt Gawlik took advantage of the low fuel cost and drove from Chicago to Clearwater for the holiday.

"I decided I've never been to Florida before, so might as well drive down and see the beaches," Gawlik said.

"We saw some prices as low as $1.99 on the way down from Chicago," Grant said.

It's even cheaper than that at many pumps in Tampa, where many stations are under $2 a gallon. AAA says gas could hit a 13-year low by Tuesday.

Sky 9 also spotted some heavier than normal traffic heading out to Clearwater Beach on Friday morning.

AAA says 44 million Americans will travel this weekend, with 37 million going by car.
