Imagine thousands of runners making their way across the Sunshine Skyway Feet - at 200 feet above Tampa Bay.

  • Proposed Sunshine Skyway Marathon gets approval from Palmetto officials
  • Still awaiting Manatee County to sign off on it
  • Race would be 13.1 miles across bridge into Palmetto on New Year's Day

Manatee County is a step closer to making that scene a reality.

On Monday, Palmetto city commissioners approved their part of the deal.

The Sunshine Skyway Marathon would close the bridge on New Year's Day as runners made their way across the structure into the city of Palmetto.

Race organizers say the day historically sees the lowest amount of bridge traffic. The bridge would be closed in the morning hours from 6 a.m. to 9 a.m.

The 13.1-mile race would begin at the rest area of the bridge on the north end of the bridge with runners going into Palmetto's Blackstone Park.

Event organizers still need approval from Manatee County.
