The days of having your purchases put in plastic bags in St. Petersburg might be numbered.

  • Council could vote on measure Aug. 17
  • Goal is to make city more environmentally friendly

City leaders are looking at a proposed ordinance that would ban the use of plastic bags in stores and other businesses.

It's part of a larger effort to make the city more environmentally friendly.

City Councilman Karl Nurse believes residents won't have much trouble making the adjustment because they've done similar things before to help the environment.

"Rather like curb side recycling, which for like a decade we were told was impossible," he said. "Once we got it implemented, there was about a several month phase in, and now it's just normal."

A committee is scheduled to review the proposed bag ban ordinance in two weeks.

The City Council could vote on the measure on Aug. 17.
