The commissioner for District 4 said he is looking at things differently now after serving in Iraq, Syria, Afghanistan, and southwest Asia for more than a year.

“You’re really looking at current operations, life and death, you know, so when you bring that back here, you know some of the petty stuff, it can be annoying so you really want to focus on important things,” Holcomb said.

While Holcomb was overseas, John Mitten stepped in to fill his place.

“In some ways I was jealous of the key things he was able to bring to the board and point out, but overall just a tremendous job he did,” Mitten said.

One of the projects Holcomb is planning to work on over the next few months is getting some repairs done at Veterans Memorial Park.

“We’re going to try and get some paves and get some tile in there and spruce it up. And we need to add an access for wheelchairs,” Holcomb explained. “Work with some businesses, the airport is in my district, so looking to work with them, maybe hear if there are any issues going on with them.”

Most of all, Holcomb said he is just thankful to finally be back home with his family and friends.

He also said he cannot be deployed again for five years, which is standard for Navy reservists.
