A man was taken into custody after trying to lure a 7-year-old into a motorhome by saying he had a puppy, police said.

According to the Haines City Police Department, the incident occurred Sunday at a Publix on Highway 17/92.

Dale Collins is accused of starting a conversation with the child, who was part of a fundraising effort. Collins told the child he had a puppy and that it could be seen in his camper.

Police said witnesses were suspicious and began yelling at Collins, who fled the area in the motorhome.

Officers saw his vehicle and stopped it. Collins, whose last known address was in New York, was charged with lure/entice of a child under the age of 12.
