  • The sinkhole opened on July 14, swallowing two homes on Ocean Pines Drive.

Since then, Pasco County officials have been trying to determine the best way to move forward with repair work. However, well testing, ground stability checks and safety concerns slowed any repair process.

Kevin Guthrie, Pasco's Assistant County Administrator for Public Safety, said Thursday that repair work could begin after this weekend. Workers will start with debris removal and then decontaminate the site to insure the surrounding water is safe.

That could take about two to three weeks, Guthrie said.

"We will then hit the pause button, I'm not saying the stop button, we will hit the pause button," Guthrie said. "And then come back to the board of county commission and let them know what their set of options are."

The sinkhole is about 230 feet wide and 50 feet deep.

In addition to the two homes destroyed, residents of five other homes have been displaced as a precaution.
