  • Water main break under Spring Hill apartment
  • Officials said it is not a sinkhole situation
  • Crews on scene repairing hole

According to the Hernando County Sheriff's Office, the hole opened at the Brookview Villas located at 7114 Barclay Ave.

Officials said it is not a sinkhole situation but out of caution, two units have been evacuated and a boil water notice is in effect.

A six-inch water main break occurred just before 4 a.m., causing a 10-foot wide, six-feet deep hole in the driveway in front of one of the units. The resident at the unit, Mary Boone, heard a loud crash, woke up and then noticed their was no water.

She escaped serious injury when she walked out of her unit and fell into the watery hole. She suffered a few scratches and bruises but managed to climb out of the hole.

"Well I went to go move my car when I saw how severely the water was coming out," Boone said. "I saw the sand I thought I had a sidewalk there. All I saw was water gushing over it but at least I thought the sidewalk was there. So I went walking across it and down I go I went into the hole all the way up to my neck. I still wasn't touching the bottom. I started screaming but they were all sleeping."

The ground was washed out approximately 30 feet beneath the unit.

A boil water notice is in effect for the entire Brookview Villas complex until further notice.

Officials are on scene to repair the break, fill the hole and determine the structural integrity of the apartment building.
