Fundraising efforts for the victims of last week's Tampa Electric power plant accident are exceeding expectations.

Three men died and three others were seriously injured June 29 in an accident at the plant. Routine maintenance on a slag tank was being conducted when the accident happened.

A longtime TECO employee Michael McCort, 60, and a contractor, Christopher Irvin, 40, were killed. Antonio Navarrete, 21, died Wednesday from injuries suffered in the accident.

Gary Marine Jr., 32, Frank Lee Jones, 55, and Armando J Perez, 56 all suffered life-threatening injuries.

The Apollo Beach community is coming together to support the families of those affected by the tragedy. A GoFund me page has been set up for donations to help the families with medical bills, expenses, food and transportation.

In addition, a fundraiser to benefit the injured workers, including food, entertainment and a raffle will be held on Thursday at 6:00 p.m. at Alpha's Pizza and Pasta Restaurant, 1312 Apollo Beach Blvd. in Apollo Beach.

Already, more than $8,000 has been raised for Jones and Marine Jr. and their families. Both men, along with two others working for a different contractor are still being treated at Tampa General Hospital.

Funds also are being raised for Irvin's family.

Gaffin Industrial Services is the contract company Jones, Marine Jr. and Irvin were working for at the time of the accident. Owner Mark Gaffin helped organize the fundraiser.

"It'll bring tears to your eyes," Gaffin said of the accident. "The whole thing is just tragic but the support is incredible. You feel like you are being held up."

The conditions of the injured men have not been released but they are dealing with severe burns and other injuries.
