An early-morning 911 call in Plant City led to a short pursuit and a suspect being shot and killed by police officers.

  • Plant City police shoot, kill suspect
  • Shooting happened at BP gas station at 1908 East Alsobrook Road
  • No officers injured

No officers were injured.

According to Plant City Sgt. Alfred Van Duyne, a 5 a.m. 911 call prompted the series of events.

The call from a man featured screaming, crying and grunting before abruptly ending. At one point the man said he needed help and was being chased by unknown subjects for two hours.

That led police to ping area cell phone towers and determine where the call came from.

Officers were able to get a vehicle description from the location of the call and catch up with the vehicle a short time later.

Police used stop sticks to stop the speeding vehicle, a black Nissan Altima, near on Coronet Rd. at the intersection of  Park Road and E. Alsobrook Street.

The driver lost control and crashed the car near a BP gas station at 1908 East Alsobrook Road, where the suspect got out of the vehicle.

Police said the driver refused commands and reached into the back seat of the car.

That's when two officers fired, killing the man, identified as Jesus Cervantes, 35. Police later advised that Cervantes had two prior Plant City arrests in his record -- one in 2010 and the other in January, 2017. Both arrests led to charges of domestic battery.
