Police in Plant City on Friday released the names of two officers involved in the fatal shooting of a suspect.

The Plant City Police Department said Officer Gerald Baker and Officer Derek Hartmann fired shots at Jesus Cervantes, 35, after a Thursday morning vehicle chase.

Officers used stop stick to stop the speeding vehicle, a black Nissan Altima, at the intersection of Park Road and E. Alsobrook Street.

The driver lost control and crashed the car near a BP gas station at 1908 East Alsobrook Road, where the suspect got out of the vehicle.

Police said the driver refused commands and reached into the back seat of the car, and the two officers fired at him.

Baker and Hartmann were placed on administrative leave as the investigation continues, which is standard procedure when an officer is involved in a shooting.

Cervantes had two prior Plant City arrests in his record -- one in 2010 and the other in January, 2017. Both arrests led to charges of domestic battery.
