Rallies took place across the Tampa Bay area on Sunday in response to the weekend events in Charlottesville, Virginia.

Several hundred people representing dozens of organizations converged on downtown Tampa on Sunday to remember those injured and killed in Saturday's clash between white supremacist and anti-hate groups in Virginia.

Other rallies took place in Lakeland, St. Petersburg and Winter Haven.

It was a collage of sentiments — some of them conflicting. Members of the Black Lives Matter movement echoed slogans bashing law enforcement while other speakers expressed unity.

The crowd had planned to gather around the base of the Confederate memorial that County Commissioners recently voted to have removed from county property, but the crowd was so large that the event was moved across the street to the Joe Chillura Courthouse Square.

After the speeches, the crowd took to the streets and marched toward Curtis Hixon Park.

All of the local events remained peaceful.
