Gert has now been upgraded to a Hurricane in the Atlantic. Still no threat to Florida or the U.S.

A cold front moving toward the East Coast of the U.S. is turning Gert toward the northeast which will push Gert away from the U.S. the next couple days.

Gert could easily become a category two hurricane as it’s in a good spot over the warm Gulf stream waters of the Atlantic.  But the good news is it won’t affect any land as it will stay between the U.S. and Bermuda on a path toward the cooler north Atlantic waters.

Gert is moving toward the north at 8 mph. A turn toward the north-northeast is expected sometime tonight.

Maximum sustained winds have increased to 75 mph with higher gusts.

Elsewhere we’re watching a couple tropical waves in the far eastern Atlantic that could slowly develop over the next week.
