Authorities in North Carolina have made four arrests in connection with the removal and vandalism of a Confederate statue outside the Old Durham Courthouse.

  • Statue was pulled down Monday in Durham
  • Four people have been arrested, more arrests could follow
  • Protest started as vigil in wake of Charlottesville violence

Deputies arrested 35-year-old Dante Strobino, 24-year-old Ngoc Loan Tran, 22-year-old Takiya Thompson, and 39-year-old Peter Gilbert.

All are charged with disorderly conduct by injury to a statue, damage of real property and other related charges.

Strobino and Tran are both being held on a $10,000 bond.

The protest started as a vigil on Monday in response to the deadly white supremacist protests in Charlottesville over the weekend and ended with the monument being pulled down by a rope.

Video of the incident was used to help identify the suspects.

Thompson is also accused of damaging the statue and inciting a riot.

She was taken into custody Tuesday shortly after speaking at a news conference at N.C. Central University and made her first court appearance Wednesday.

The sheriff's office expects to make more arrests.
