With incumbent District 6 City Councilman Karl Nurse terming out in 2018, a host of candidates are running in 2017 to take his place.

It's a race that will be decided in part with the primary election Tuesday, along with the St. Pete mayoral race.

The primary election will narrow the race to two candidates, who will face off in the general election on November 7.

The candidates for the race include:

  • Justin Bean, businessman
  • Jim Jackson, former Pinellas County School Board candidate
  • Robert Blackmon, real estate investor
  • Eritha Cainion, activist
  • Gina Driscoll, St. Petersburg Downtown Neighborhood Association President
  • Corey Givens Jr., President, Lakewood Terrace Neighborhood Association
  • James Scott, USF St. Petersburg graduate, clean energy activist
  • Maria Scruggs, President, St. Petersburg Branch NAACP

The eventual winner of the race will take over representing residents of downtown St. Petersburg, as well as Old Southeast and Old Northeast south of 9th Avenue North at a critical time in the city's development.

The construction of the new pier, the fate of the Tropicana Field property (with or without the Tampa Bay Rays), and ongoing development of residential and business properties all are likely to heavily affect residents of the district.

In July, outgoing Councilman Nurse endorsed Gina Driscoll.
