A Citrus County family is hoping things get back to normal after they found a racial slur on their home Friday.

  • Couple finds racial slur on their home
  • People volunteer to paint over the slur
  • Some brought plants, gift certificates

Since then, they say dozens of people throughout the community have come out to help them paint over the slur.

Dayna and James White say they're overwhelmed by the support they've seen since they found the slur.

"The community has jumped in and it's heartfelt, Dayna said. "Gratitude is beyond words can ever express."

From the minute word got out about what happened, people came out to give their support to the couple.

On Friday afternoon volunteers from local radio stations came to paint over the vandalism. Local paint companies offered to repaint the entire house for free. But, that's not all.

"Some of them brought plants, some of them just hugging us. Some of them brought gift certificates so we could get out of here," Dayna said.

Many of the people that stopped by didn't want any recognition, according to Dayna. She says they were just thankful to help anyway they could.

"Some of them actually brought a surveillance system put it in the doorway didn't want to be recognized at all and he left. A gentleman did that," she said.

"It's actually setting in and you just wonder why the person did it, you know, and who just had the nerve to come on our property to do something like this," Dayna said. “You don't let a person like this overcome you, you overcome them and you know they haven't won. So you stay put and you confront them so if they're bold enough to come back you'll be ready."

No word yet on any arrests in connection to this incident.

Dayna and James say they’ve lived in their Citrus County home for three years.
