  • Woman pointed shotgun at deputies

The incident happened Sunday afternoon at a residence on Cedar Drive.

Deputies were called to assist officers from the Brooksville Police Department, who had responded to a report of a suicidal woman barricaded inside the residence.

"I think one of our most basic instincts is self preservation- if you're trying to hurt yourself - there's very little you won't do," said Hernando Sheriff Al Nienhuis. "Very likely to do anything if you want to hurt yourself and take your own life. It escalates the danger involved."

The information law enforcement initially received indicated that the woman was armed with a shotgun and had access to other weapons, a Sheriff’s Office report stated.

The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office also responded to the scene to assist Hernando County deputies and the SWAT team.

The woman left the residence and pointed a shotgun at several deputies, according to the Sheriff’s Office. Hillsborough County deputies discharged their firearms, according to authorities.

The woman was injured and airlifted to a trauma center with non-life-threatening injuries.

No deputies were injured in the shooting.

The deputies who fired their weapons will be placed on paid administrative leave, which is standard procedure.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement will take over the investigation.
