Hurricane Irma weakened into a still-dangerous tropical storm Monday while it traversed the Florida peninsula.

The huge storm caused damage, flooding and widespread power outages throughout the Bay area, as well as other parts of the state.

"Irma was a massive system," said Bay News 9 Meteorologist Alan Winfield. "It came ashore on the Gulf side of the state but yet there were surge problems in Miami and Fort Lauderdale and all the way up the east coast to Jacksonville.

Irma once was the most powerful hurricane ever recorded in the open Atlantic, a Category 5 with a peak wind speed of 185 mph. Irma initially took aim at the Miami area and the rest of Florida's Atlantic coast.

But then Irma made a westward shift and lost some of its punch while crossing Cuba's northern coast - just before a crucial turn into Florida's Gulf Coast.

"The rainfall totals from Irma were pretty impressive," Winfield said. "In fact, we saw about 10 inches of rain or even a little bit more in one band that ran from Polk County up to Citrus County. Other places got 4 to 6 inches of rain on average, so very healthy amounts.

"We're thankful this storm was not like Harvey and just sat on us. That kept the rain totals from being higher."
