Construction is underway on USF's new Morsani College of Medicine and Heart Institute and school officials and community leaders are celebrating the milestone.

  • Construction underway on USF's new Morsani College of Medicine
  • Construction expected to last for a couple of years
  • Building will open to students in late 2019

The site for new building is all part of downtown Tampa's transformation--Water Street Tampa.

Morsani College of Medicine will be a key anchor in the world's first wellness district, and university officials said the location puts MCOM right where it needs to be--close to its primary teaching affiliate, Tampa General Hospital and USF's simulation center.

Construction is expected to last for the next couple of years, and USF officials said the new $153 million building will open to students in late 2019. They said medical student applications are skyrocketing and current MD students have the highest MCAT scores of any Florida Medical School.

USF officials said there's no increased student costs associated with this new building and all funding is secured--some through the state and the rest through private donors.
