The Lakeland Housing Authority is giving seniors living on a fixed income a new option for housing.

  • The Micro-Cottages at Williamstown to feature 24 duplexes
  • New housing community to help seniors living on fixed income

Construction is underway on its first new housing development in more than 10 years--the Micro-Cottages at Williamstown. The senior citizen affordable housing community is located in Lakeland off of Highway 98, near Sam’s Club and just north of Lakeland Square Mall.

It features 24 duplexes with one and two bedroom rental units. Preference will be given to veterans.

“They’ve served this country and they’ve gotten older and they deserve the assistance because many of them made sacrifices for this country and many of them are in need of housing and they can’t find any that’s affordable,” said Ben Stevenson, Executive Director of the Lakeland Housing Authority.

Stevenson said the authority’s other properties rarely have unoccupied units, causing a severe need for affordable housing in Lakeland.

“For every 10 families that’s in need of affordable rental housing, there’s only three units of affordable housing available in Lakeland,” Stevenson explained.

The max income for living in the micro-cottages is $29,400 for a single person household and $33,600 for a two-person household.  He said the second room is designed for a caretaker.

People interested in moving into the cottages can start applying in February. The units are expected to be move-in ready the summer of 2018.
