Residents of a quiet, lakeside neighborhood in Polk County are on edge after a man was robbed and killed there this week.

  • William Reiss killed, Kenneth Maier injured
  • Deputies fear up to 31 guns stolen from residence
  • Incident happened on Berkley Road in Polk County

Deputies believe the culprits are armed with guns stolen from the crime scene.

The incident happened Wednesday afternoon in the 7400 block of Berkley Road in Polk City.

According to the Polk County Sheriff's Office, William Reiss was killed and Kenneth Maier was injured.

During their investigation, the Sheriff's Office learned that Reiss collected guns and that as many as 31 could have been stolen.

"These guns aren't going to be purchased by Sunday school teachers," Sheriff Grady Judd said. "These guns will go back to the streets with other thugs and other criminals and other robbers. That's why we have to get these folks off the street and recover the firearms."

Sheriff Grady Judd said the guns could have made Reiss a target.

Neighbors said they are afraid after what happened. They said Reiss and Maier mostly kept to themselves.

Judd said the gun collection could have made Reiss a target.

"He had a cross section," Judd said. "He had handguns, semi-automatic handguns, he had long rifles, he had hunting rifles."

The Sheriff's Office released surveillance video of two cars deputies are looking for in connection to the case. One of the vehicles is a black Chevy sedan. The other is a blue 2008 Dodge Ram with Florida license plate Z2SKD.

Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-226-TIPS.
