CareerSource Tampa Bay board members will meet Friday and likely come to a decision on the future of embattled CareerSource Tampa Bay CEO Edward Peachey.

Hillsborough County Commissioners voted unanimously Thursday to recommend Peachey be suspended without pay during an investigation into the agency possibly reporting more people placed into new jobs than it actually had.

  • CareerSource Tampa Bay board members will decide Ed Peachey's fate
  • Vote runs counter to previous decision by CareerSource Pinellas execs
  • Previous decision allowed CEO to stay on the job
  • Both employment agencies structures to be revised

CareerSource Tampa Bay's Board of Directors will vote on Peachey's fate today.

The main concern is to what possible extent was the agency getting any state incentives by skewing their job placement numbers?

County commissioners in Pinellas say the CareerSource board needs to take more aggressive action.

But commissioners hands are tied - county commissioners are in charge of the CareerSource budget. But they have no say in how the CareerSource board of directors is stacked.

And that is something that commissioners in both counties are now interested in changing.

The decision by Hillsborough's commission runs counter to the decision made on Jan. 31 by CareerSource Pinellas's executive committee. Their decision involved allowing Peachey to remain on the job while an ad hoc committee continued to collect facts on the incident.

The chair of the Pinellas County Commission, Kenneth Welch, agreed with Gerard's position on Peachey's continued presence at the agency.

"I think they did make the wrong decision yesterday," said Pinellas County Commission Chair Kenneth Welch. "Chair Andre Green. Chair of the CareerSource Pinellas Board has reconsidered and sent out an email saying that he intends to suspend the CEO with pay, but I think that’s a step forward. I think he should be removed the situation."

Looking forward, both county commissions are looking at completely revamping the power structures of CareerSource Pinellas and CareerSource Tampa Bay once the investigation is concluded.
