Tarpon Springs Police officers and detectives are investigating a Feb. 23 shooting that left a groundskeeper injured and triggered a precautionary lockout at three nearby schools.

Officials said police first received a call in connection with shots fired at 300 S. Florida Avenue around 8:45 a.m. Officers who responded to the scene found a man suffering from a gunshot wound.

Tarpon Springs Fire Rescue transported the man to Bayonet Point Hospital in Hudson for treatment.

The man was an employee of a landscape contractor and was performing grounds maintenance at the location, Sunset Shores Association Residential Units, when he was apparently shot. At this time detectives have no description of who shot the victim or the source of the gunfire. 

As a precaution, Tarpon Springs High School, Tarpon Springs Middle School, and Sunset Hills Elementary School were all, due to the proximity to the scene, placed in lockout status. Detectives have no evidence that the incident had any relation to school activities.

No further information has been released.
