The sentencing trial continues for the man who shot and killed Tarpon Springs police officer Charles Kondek in December 2014.

Marco Parilla pleaded guilty to first-degree murder in the case in October.

Kondek was responding to a noise complaint at an apartment complex when the 27-year-old Parilla opened fire, shooting Kondek seven times.

The state is seeking the death penalty.

The prosecution rested its case after testimony from one of the detectives who interviewed Parilla shortly after the shooting.

Detective Keith Johnson testified that Parilla changed his story several times, at one point saying he blacked out, and didn't even realize an officer was there when the shooting happened.

Johnson told jurors Parilla had an "everybody's out to get me attitude."

When questioned by the defense, Johnson did admit Parilla showed remorse upon finding out officer Kondek had died.

The defense called two witnesses in the hopes of proving what it considers mitigating factors, including problems at birth and a rough childhood.

One of those witnesses, Parilla's mother, answered questions through an interpreter and cried as the defense showed her son's baby photos.

Asked if she loved her son, the mother said, "Of course, I love him very much." Asked if she was afraid, she said she was.

Court was adjourned Friday, with the sentencing trial set to resume with more witness testimony on Tuesday.
