A lightning strike caught a travel trailer on fire during a severe thunderstorm on Tuesday and killed a dog, according to St. Pete Fire Rescue.

  • Fire sparked at salvage yard
  • No people injured in fire
  • Fire spread to nearby trees

"I'm sorry for the puppy," said neighbor Lateya Jones, 35. "Just glad it didn't catch fire to our house."

The travel trailer was located in a salvage yard at 700 40th Street S. in St. Petersburg. Firefighters said no people were injured in the fire.

Trees surrounding the property were charred from the fire. Jones said her son was home at the time and was worried the fire would spread to their home.

"He Facetimed us and we could actually see the flames from our kitchen window, like it was fixing to hit the fence," she said. "So, he was like, 'I'm just fixing to grab pooch and I'm fixing to get out.'"

Jones said she fire trucks were blocking her street. The mom tried to walk to her home but said the lightning was so intense that she had to run back to her car.

"I tried to run down with the umbrella, but the lightning was coming," Jones said.

The man who lived in that trailer said the fire killed his pregnant dog and he was too upset to do an interview.
