A Largo man has been charged with multiple counts of video voyeurism, after police said he placed recording devices in a women's restroom at an office complex where he worked.

  • John Gibbs, 49, currently in Pinellas County Jail
  • Gibbs faces 9 counts of video voyeurism
  • Gibbs previously a maintenance man in the building

Pinellas Park police say John Gibbs, 49, placed the cameras in the ceiling of a bathroom at the Smarty Sixty Six building, which houses at least 60 individual businesses.

"It's the first time I've heard of anything like this happening here, and it's quite a shock that it did happen," said Michael Ford, an employee at Armstrong EZ Shop in the complex. "It's very sad for the community here."

Ford says Gibbs worked as a maintenance man inside the facility, and he knew most of the tenants who ran businesses out of that building.

"He seemed like a decent fellow," Ford explained. "He was very happy going, he worked hard for the businesses here."

Gibbs appeared in court Friday afternoon for his first appearance on the nine counts of video voyeurism. He is being held on $90,000 bond, $10,000 for each count.

If he were to make bond, he would be placed on house arrest, be required to wear an ankle monitor, and stay at least 500 feet from the Smarty Sixty Six building.

As of this writing, Gibbs remains in the Pinellas County jail. His next court date has not been set.

Investigators believe there may be more victims, and asks anyone who believes they might have been recorded in that restroom to contact the Pinellas Park Police Department at 727-369-7864.
