The man, later identified by Georgia investigators as Timothy O. Wyatt, 41, was wanted out of Fulton County for the murder of his girlfriend.

Officers were alerted that a fugitive was possibly hiding out in the Tampa area.

The suspect was spotted in a Chevy Impala and police followed him.

As the suspect fled from police on Interstate 275 and several Tampa streets, he fired shots at officers.

The Florida Highway Patrol joined the pursuit to help Tampa officers.

The brief chase ended in the area of E 28th Avenue and N 15th Street, where the suspect abandoned the car. He then tried to carjack someone and continued to shoot at officers.

Officers returned gunfire, killing the suspect, authorities said.

No officers were injured, according to Tampa police.

"At some point he realized police officers were behind him," Tampa Police Chief Brian Dugan said of the chase and eventual shooting of the suspect. "He started shooting at the cops as he was driving. The pursuit ended at 28th Ave and 15th Street where he attempted to carjack someone, engaged in another round of gunfire with the police officers and he was taken down."

Carjacking victim speaks out

Left: Timothy Wyatt was wanted for the murder of his girlfriend in Fulton County, Georgia, according to Georgia law enforcement. Right: Katrina Majurie was in the car Wyatt tried to carjack prior to Tampa Police shooting and killing him Sunday, April 1, 2018.

The woman whose car Wyatt tried to take, Katrina Majurie, said she was driving down 15th Street in Tampa heading to the grocery store when she saw a police car driving in the wrong direction.

"I saw they were getting ready to block off the street, so I turned," Majurie said. "I was going to turn right down 28th."

As she was attempting to do that, another officer's car blocked her path and shots rang out.

"I stopped and put my hands up, and as I put my hands up, I heard gunfire coming from behind me," she said. "So when I looked over, that’s when I saw the suspect shooting at us."

Majurie quickly crept down under the driver’s seat away from the flying bullets, which at this point, shattered the back window of her rental car.

Authorities say Wyatt then attempted to carjack Majurie after ditching his Chevy Impala, but officers returned fire, killing him. When the smoke cleared, Majurie was able to leave her car unharmed.

"The Chief came down, he introduced himself to me, he made sure I was ok and they kept me pretty calm," said Majurie. "I'm thankful. I'm just happy I was able to make it home to my kids."
