Discovery Cove is welcoming a newborn dolphin. But this birth is more important because of the science behind the birth.

Discovery Cove's parent company, SeaWorld Parks and Entertainment, says this dolphin was born with new technology that allowed them to pre-determine the sex of the animal, using "sperm-sexing" and artificial insemination. SeaWorld says only 15 dolphins worldwide have been successfully born using this technology.

In this case, SeaWorld chose to have a female dolphin, and that was done successfully. The three and a half foot long, 35 pound female calf is doing well, as is the mother. It was actually born Nov. 30.

This is the 25th dolphin born at Discovery Cove since the park opened in 2000.
