Congresswoman Corrine Brown filed suit Friday to stop the state of Florida from cutting the early voting period from 15 days to seven.

She called the move "particularly harmful," especially the elimination of voting the Sunday before Election Day.

Brown also said the shortened early voter period is a "deliberate attempt to suppress the African-American vote."

The suit is based in part upon academic research showing black voters are more likely to cast ballots during the early voting period.

Brown's lawyers plan to file a motion in the next few days, asking for an emergency hearing on an injunction that would restore voting on August 12.
